Excessive sweating is often not dangerous, but that doesn’t mean it should be ignored.
Left untreated, it can interfere with daily activities, cause discomfort or embarrassment, and impact self-esteem. In some cases, it may also signal an underlying medical condition that requires attention.

If left untreated, excessive sweating can worsen over time, lead to skin irritation or infections, stain clothing, and cause embarrassment—especially in social or professional settings.

Address it early before it becomes a bigger concern.

You Don’t Have to “Just Live With It”

What causes excessive sweating, and is it a medical condition?

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, occurs when the body's sweat glands are overactive and produce more sweat than is necessary to regulate temperature. In most cases, this is classified as primary hyperhidrosis, which is not linked to any underlying medical issue and commonly affects the underarms, hands, feet, or face. In other cases, known as secondary hyperhidrosis, the sweating may be a symptom of an underlying condition such as diabetes, thyroid issues, infections, or as a side effect of certain medications. A consultation with a dermatologist can help determine the type and best course of treatment.

What treatments are available for excessive sweating at your clinic?

At Birmingham Dermatology Clinic, we offer several effective treatment options, tailored to the severity and location of your sweating. The most popular and effective treatment is Botox (botulinum toxin) injections, which block the nerve signals responsible for activating sweat glands. We may also recommend prescription-strength antiperspirants, oral medications, or referrals for surgical options in more severe cases. Each treatment plan is personalised after a full consultation with one of our dermatology specialists.

Will excessive sweating come back after treatment?

Since most treatments, including Botox, are temporary, the effects will gradually wear off over time as nerve signals to the sweat glands return. However, regular maintenance treatments can help keep sweating under control. Many patients return every 4 to 6 months for top-up treatments. Over time, some individuals find that the frequency or intensity of their sweating decreases with consistent treatment.
